Project Nautilus - Lead Project Manager
Case Study: DHL Project Nautilus – Distribution Centre Development
Background:
DHL Project Nautilus represents a cutting-edge 200,000 ft² distribution centre, meticulously designed to provide unparalleled storage and distribution services throughout the UK. The facility boasts extensive warehouse racking and a sophisticated three-story mezzanine to optimise stock management and distribution processes. The primary objective was to create top-tier facilities, enabling over 20 major customers to seamlessly transfer their operations to the site, with ample potential for future growth and utilisation of the sites advanced technical offerings.
During the projects execution, the scope was expanded to include the design and fit-out of office space for DHL's Global Supply Chain HR department, ensuring a modern, efficient working environment. Additionally, we managed the decommissioning of the old Fox Milne site located on the opposite side of Milton Keynes.
With a dedicated team comprising 14 workstream leads and numerous other project members, we successfully delivered a thriving site poised for long-term success.

- Oversaw the fit-out of the Global HR office, creating a modern, ergonomic workspace tailored to the needs of the HR team.
- Implemented design elements that fostered productivity and comfort, ensuring compliance with current building regulations.
3. Fit Out of Tech Labs for Recycling E-Waste:
- Led the development and fit-out of specialised tech labs dedicated to e-waste recycling.
- Ensured the labs were equipped with cutting-edge technology and tools to facilitate efficient recycling processes and support sustainability initiatives.
4. Team Building and Programme Management:
- Fostered a collaborative team environment, building a cohesive unit of professionals dedicated to the projects success.
- Implemented effective programme management techniques to track progress, manage risks, and ensure all project milestones were met.
5. Transition of more than 20 Customer from Legacy Site:
- Successfully orchestrated the seamless transition of over 20 customers from a legacy site to the new distribution centre.
- Ensured minimal disruption to customer operations through meticulous planning and execution.
6. Handover to Operations:
- Managed the comprehensive handover process, providing detailed documentation and training to ensure a smooth transition to the operational team.
- Ensured all stakeholders were fully briefed and the facility was ready for immediate use.
Conclusion
As the Project Manager, I coordinated with multiple stakeholders, oversaw the meticulous planning and execution of all phases, and ensured the facility met all regulatory standards. The successful completion of Project Nautilus not only provided a cutting-edge distribution centre but also set a benchmark for efficiency, safety, and innovation in warehouse management.
